Planning an Andaman trip is easier when you understand the basic route, the ferry timings, and how many days to keep for each island. Most travelers try to fit too much into a short visit, but the islands are best enjoyed with a little breathing room between transfers and activities.
This guide is adapted for Elysian Boutique Stays from the original Medium post: Guide for Andaman Travel Planning.
Start with Port Blair
Most Andaman trips begin at Port Blair, where flights arrive from major Indian cities. It is usually a good idea to keep your first day simple, especially if your flight lands later in the day. You can visit Cellular Jail, attend the light and sound show, or stay overnight before taking a ferry to the islands.
Plan your ferry transfers early
Ferries connect Port Blair with Havelock Island and Neil Island. Seats can fill up during busy travel periods, so it is better to book ferries in advance once your flights are confirmed.
Keep some buffer time between flights and ferries. Weather, sea conditions, and operational changes can affect schedules, so avoid planning a tight same-day transfer when possible.
Spend enough time on Havelock Island
Havelock Island is one of the main highlights of an Andaman trip. It works well for beach time, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, relaxed cafe visits, and slow island days.
For most travelers, two to three nights on Havelock feels comfortable. If you want to dive, visit multiple beaches, or simply avoid rushing, add an extra night.
Include Neil Island if you have time
Neil Island is quieter and smaller than Havelock. It is a good fit for travelers who enjoy calm beaches, cycling, natural rock formations, and a slower pace.
If your trip is short, prioritize Havelock. If you have six or seven days, adding Neil Island can make the itinerary feel more complete.
Choose activities around the season
Popular Andaman activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, sea walking, kayaking, island hopping, and beach picnics. The best activity plan depends on weather, sea clarity, and your comfort level in the water.
Do not overload every day with paid activities. Keep time for beaches, meals, rest, and travel between locations.
A simple Andaman itinerary flow
For a shorter trip, you can follow this structure:
- Day 1: Arrive in Port Blair and stay overnight.
- Day 2: Take the ferry to Havelock and relax.
- Day 3: Explore beaches or plan scuba diving/snorkeling.
- Day 4: Add another Havelock activity or travel to Neil Island.
- Day 5: Return to Port Blair.
- Day 6: Fly out.
For a longer trip, add one more night in Havelock or Neil Island instead of rushing through both.
What to keep in mind
Book flights, ferries, and stays early during peak season. Carry sunscreen, comfortable beachwear, basic medicines, ID proofs, and a dry bag for boat days.
Internet connectivity can vary across the islands, so download tickets, booking confirmations, and maps before traveling.
Final planning tip
The best Andaman itinerary is not the busiest one. Give yourself enough time for ferry transfers, beach pauses, and weather changes. A relaxed plan will usually feel better than a packed checklist.
